Adam Frost shares advice on choosing and planting these easy-to-grow plants

lthough the garden is currently glorious in the final throes of summer, I can’t resist looking ahead to spring and all the bounty that I know bulbs will bring. I love the magic of planting a bulb, knowing for sure it will put on a beautiful display when the garden needs it most. I’ve been lucky enough to inherit some buried treasure in my garden – we have naturalised bulbs in the grass, scattered along the bases of hedges and shrubs and under the canopies of deciduous trees. This year we had a special moment, discovering a bulb – delicate yellow Tulipasylvestris– that I had never been able to grow before sitting happily under the apple trees. This is one of the great things about bulbs, there’s one for every position; although most only need a patch of free-draining soil and some sunshine. Bulbs are some of the easiest and best-value garden plants to grow, but to make sure you get the most out of the ones you buy this year just follow my advice on how to choose the best specimens, where to position them and the planting techniques that will ensure a beautiful display.
