Protection for our rural environments
A House of Lords Select Committee is looking into whether enough is being done to protect wildlife and biodiversity in rural areas. In a review of conservation legislation laid down in The Natural Environment and Rural Communities Act 2006, the committee will explore whether the Act needs to be changed or updated to rural-proof policies for years to come. It will also consider how Brexit is likely to affect our national environments and thriving rural communities. Lord Cameron, who leads the review, stated: “[The Act] has a broad remit that is supposed to protect the environment and biodiversity while also promoting the needs of rural communities. Eleven years on we need to ask whether this act and the current delivery structures approach these issues in the right way.” Written evidence must be submitted to the committee by 11 September 2017.
