Mixed shapes

Why it works

Making a cluster of different containers look cohesive relies on there being a unifying element. This may be the colour or style of the pots, or the palette of plants you grow in them. Here, this mix of grey and terracotta pots in different styles, sizes and shapes is held together by the planting choice. The fresh green of the various species brings everything together, and makes the cluster feel like it is a carefully curated family of colours and forms.

Golden rules

Choose plants with a similar texture, leaf or flower colour, so they unify the disparate pots.

Stage the pots in layers with occasional focal points, such as the tree fern or lollipop bay tree.

Go for as wide a range of shapes and sizes as you can. This way you’ll be able to move and restructure the display throughout the season.
