Get growing

-

Use thyme and oregano for that authentic pizza flavour. Line an old basket with a recycled compost bag, adding a few holes for drainage. Fill with gritty compost, old compost is ideal because these herbs thrive in poor soil. Put it in the sunniest place and water sparingly.

There should be lots of tin cans around during or after lockdown and the older they get, the rustier they’ll become – very arty! Make holes in the base, fill with compost and grow one herb or salad plant in each one. Position them together or in a line.

For those with little space and perhaps no garden at all, vertical growing is the answer. Using recycled yogurt pots, you can have a whole series of herbs starting with the ones that love sun at the top and with a simple box at floor level – an old drawer will do – to catch the water, and for mint, basil and parsley, which will take a bit of shade and appreciate the extra water.

There are plenty of herbs and salads that you can grow on your kitchen windowsill. A great one for kids is the classic mustard and cress. Take an old punnet with holes in the base, line with a damp paper towel or some of that stockpiled toilet paper and sprinkle seed sparingly on its surface. You’ll be cutting it within a matter of days.
