Caring for new trees

-

Containerised trees can be planted out all year round, but in summer, regular, ongoing watering is essential while roots establish. Even in our famously damp summers, soil below the surface can remain surprisingly dry. Keep tree ties secure and look out for the damage a stake can cause, should the tree connect with it. Trunk damage is irreversible, if not fatal. Keep a 1m-wide, weed-free circle around the tree. This helps prevent damage from strimmers, reduces weed and grass competition, and makes watering, feeding and mulching easier.
