Growing for gold

You’re probably enjoying all the fruits of your labour in the garden right now – and the folks at Tyrrells have been hard at work too!

-

This is the perfect time of year to fully appreciate your garden, knowing all the hours you’ve spent planting, cultivating and trimming, have been worth it as your outdoor space blooms into life. In much the same way, over at Tyrrells Court Farm in Herefordshire, the proud farmers have been busy expertly nurturing and growing their potatoes. In fact, the current crop will be ready to harvest very soon, so they can be turned into delicious, authentically British Tyrrells hand-cooked potato crisps.

The pick of the crop

Interestingly, which potatoes are used to make Tyrrells depends entirely on the time of year and the crop cycle. Between July and November, for instance, you’ll be tucking into a bag of crisps that are mainly made with Lady Rosetta potatoes, with their beautiful pale flesh and vibrant red skin. The rest of the year, the delicious crisps are created using Lady Claire or the big, bold Taurus potatoes, along with a few other varieties. Having a good field selection is also important, as different varieties prefer different soil types. Other vital factors such as seed rate and soil fertility contribute to overall yield, but above all of that is the Great British weather, with perfect planting temperatures ranging from 8°C upwards, leading ideally to 100 days of growth with warm sunny days and rain at night.

Striving for perfection

During the summer months the freshly harvested potatoes are delivered directly to Tyrrells Court Farm, where they are turned into delicious hand-cooked crisps.

Only top quality ingredients are used to season the crisps that we all know and love, including favourites Sea Salt & Cider Vinegar, Mature Cheddar & Chive and Sweet Chilli & Red Pepper. So go on, why not treat yourself to some delectable Tyrrells hand-cooked potato crisps as you relax in the garden?
