Youngsters get into the swing of golf
PUPILS from two Bridgend County Borough schools last week got in to the swing of golf during the Amateur Championship at Royal Porthcawl.
Welsh competitors might have fared poorly in the 121st staging of the event, but the next generation of golfers shaped up well.
Last Thursday, Porthcawl Primary School pupils got the ball rolling at Royal Porthcawl.
And the day after children from Mynydd Cynffig Junior School in Kenfig Hill teed it up at the Lock’s Common course.
The initiative came through Golf Development Wales which is the development arm of the Golf Union of Wales.
They aim to create opportunities for every- one to experience golf in Wales, and encourage a network of thriving clubs.
Royal Porthcawl professional Peter Evans and his Pyle & Kenfig counterpart Dylan Williams headed the junior coaching clinics.
And, as a Porthcawl Primary School spokesperson said, the children really enjoyed the session at the golf club.
“Thank you Royal Porthcawl Golf Club and the Golf Union of Wales for making the children so welcome.
“For many of them, it was a first taste of golf - and they simply loved it.’’
And one of the 29-strong party of Mynydd Cynffig children enjoyed the event so much that they declared: “I really want to take up golf after today.’’
Two years ago, Royal Porthcawl successfully staged the Rolex Senior Open Championship – and will do so again next year.
And the Amateur Championship last week kept the club on the golfing radar with Sky Sports televising highlights each night.
However, the long-term aim is get Royal Porthcawl on the rota for the really big one – the Open Championship.
