Hawks are flying high
SHOWERY rain last week cast a cloud over the league programme with several matches called off through waterlogged greens, writes Tony Poole.
However, the juggernaut clash in Division Three went ahead and high-flying Prince of Wales Court Hawks carded a 68-38 win over close challengers Caerau Athletic at Penylan Avenue.
It shot the unbeaten Hawks into seven-point lead over the Riverboaters, who have also completed one more match.
The issue was settled on the rink headed by Hawks skip Dave Hopkins, who flew to a 22-6 success.
In the same division, Aberkenfig were edged out by three shots 72-69 at Mount Pleasant who possessed a match-winner in skip Arwel Morgan via a 26-10 victory.
In the top tier, Porthcawl went down 62-49 at Skewen, who blossomed on the back of a 23-3 win from skip Phil Rose.
Kenfig Hill came close to a first win of the season in Division Two only to go down 67-62 at home to Bryn Welfare.
Skip Dai Cooper led the Bryn victory march on the back of a 20-12 rink success.
Bottom club Maesteg lost for a fifth straight time, saying ta-ta to another victory at Tata Steel through a 77-50 loss.
Maesteg Celtic also fared badly, going down 83-43 against Croeserw at Garth Park.
The Croeserw hero was skip Kenneth Rees, who won the plaudits courtesy of a 23-3 victory.
In Division Four, there were mixed fortunes for third-placed Bridgend Municipal.
Though the Newbridge Fields side beat Melyn United at home 71-62, they got turned over 61-53 against visitors Bryncoch.
Skip Jeffrey Phillips set up the victory over Melyn United after producing a 20-8 winning card.
And Prince of Wales Eagles had their wings clipped for a first time this summer, following a narrow 76-74 defeat against BP Oilers in Llandarcy Park.
Having carded five straight wins, the Eagles leaked oil on the rink that saw Oilers skip Jeff Nicholls fuel a 35-7 victory.
However, on flying home the Eagles reflected on two rink wins and a nine-point lead over nearest challengers Brynhyfryd.
