THE Reginald Fairfax Club Championsh­ip at Coed-y-Mwstwr is down to the quarter-final stage.

In last-16 ties, Michael Green beat Andy Pick, Steve O’Connell beat Matthew Richards, Andy Hill beat Gordon J Price, Stephen Thomas beat Simon McCutcheon, Barry Lewis beat Huw Martinson, Paul Bowden beat Elliot Williams, Gareth Summerton beat Jonny Witts and Lloyd Dowling beat Michael Perry.

That has set up quarterfin­al pairings (matches to be played by July 29) that involve: Green v O’Connell, Hill v Stephen Thomas, Lewis v Bowden, Summerton v Dowling.

The Silver Bowl is also down to the quarter-finals following the recent com-

pletion of last-16 stage matches.

Wayne Burnell beat Graham Caswell, Brian Day beat Stephen Stock, Rob Jones beat Jason Jones, Stephen Heskett beat Steve Hearne, Rob O’Connell beat Mark Phillis, Dave Archibald beat Richard T Commander, Marcus SmithJones beat Lewis Jenkins and Vincent Pritchard beat captain Huw Rodgers

That means the quarter-final ties are: Burnell v Day, Rob Jones v Heskett, Rob O’Connell v Archibald, Smith-Jones v Pritchard.

In last Saturday’s Steve Hearne Pairs Trophy, the winners on 131 Stableford points were Cliff Berry and Vincent Pritchard.

Four points behind came Marcus Smith-Jones and Stephen Thomas with third-placed Andy Hill and Gareth Summerton signing for 138 points.

On the same mark came fourth-placed men Rob Jones and Jimmy North with Julian Rudd and Stephen Witts on 140 points.

Leyton Bennetta and Barry Lewis together with Mark Phillis and Andy Pick registered 142 to finish one in front of two pairings – Peter Ashman and Paul Reed along with Stephen Morgan and Simon J Slennett.

The Severnside Cup was on the agenda last Saturday for the Ladies Section with Caroline E Tremlett the winner on 37 Stableford points.

A birdie on the 10th hole and six pars set up a two-point win over Wendy Asquith and third-placed Sian Hooper.

Fourth-placed Gaynor Ashman collected 33 points, as did Meg Allen, with Julie Davies sixth via 32 points.

Three competitor­s all ran up 31 points – Gill Osborne, Sandra Davies and Nicola Hopkins.

Earlier, Julie Davies took a Midweek Stabl- eford competitio­n with 37 points, including a two on number 11.

Runner-up Sheila Dymond was in sparkling form, carding 33 points along with Janet Roberts, while Carol Harrington was three points back.

Meanwhile, club captain Huw Rodgers is looking for teams of four to compete in Captain’s Charity Day on August 19.

Former Wales fly-half Jonathan Davies heads the list of celebritie­s who will be teeing it up at the Bryn Road course.

The cost is £120 and it includes coffee and bacon roll on arrival along with a one-course meal afterwards.
