World War I: In April this year a family from St Brides Major visited the war graves in France to see the last resting place and lay poppy wreaths for two relatives whose names are on our local War Memorial.
A living history for their two grandchildren and a moving and emotional journey from the village to the Somme.
RNLI: Although summer hasn’t really set in yet the RNLI have already been busy along our coast with rescues at Southerndown and Llantwit Major when people were cut off by the tide.
Congratulations: Well done to Catherine Roughley of Ewenny Road who celebrated her Graduation Ceremony with family and friends on July 11.
St Bride’s Major Community Council: Councillors recently had an evening meal with the Chairman, thus reviving an old custom when the Parish Council met annually for an informal get-together.
At the July monthly meeting, the Clerk, Chairman and four Councillors were present, along with five members of the public. Police Report detailed two crimes of theft in the area since last month.
Concern was raised over traffic congestion and inconsiderate parking during the trial of an alternative school bus stop on Southerndown Road.
Positive feedback has been received about the increased traffic flow through the village.
Two representatives from Barratts attended and gave an update on the development at Ogmore-by-Sea, answered questions relating to noise and vibration, traffic management, and foul drainage, and confirmed they had been in touch with residents to discuss these issues.
Extra signage was requested to remind drivers of the correct route to enter and leave the site to prevent large lorries from entering a cul de sac and then having to reverse out.
Complaint received that the lighting on the approach to Ogmore by Sea from Southerndown has still not been repaired and that this fault is apparently also causing problems with the traffic speed sign.
Vale Council to be notified of bramble overgrowth in various locations. Now that the bus shelters are in a good state of repair the question of their maintenance being transferred to the Vale Council was raised and will be investigated.
Donations were discussed and it was agreed to give £200 to Ogmore by Sea Village Hall Association and £50 each to the Samaritans and a local Guide, from St Brides Major & Wick Group, who has been selected to travel to Italy to help with a project to refurbish a mountain rescue hut.
Southerndown Cricket Club will also receive £200; this organisation has secured the lease on the field for a fixed term and will be holding a fund-raising event on September 17; play will resume shortly when Bridgend cricket club Great Western begin their fixture list.
A variety of birch is to be purchased for Bull Hill near the War Memorial; this tree is to replace one that has died. The Clerk will draw up a location map and short description of the commemorative trees along the B4265 for these details to be included on the display/information board planned for the area. It was reported that a local working party has been formed and hope to resolve the problem of overgrowth at Pitcot Pool now that its history has been verified.
Planning applications were discussed as well asamendments to previous applications and notification of those granted.
