Maesteg celebrate first league win of the season

-

IT was celebration time at Maesteg last week on the back of a first league win of the season, writes Tony Poole.

The Old Parish side carded victory at a seventh time of asking and on the receiving end were visitors Bryn Welfare.

Maesteg won the day 64-59 and the plaudits were heaped on skip Phil Davies who swept to a 2210 rink success.

However, while Maesteg won at the seventh attempt, the only remaining unbeaten record perished to the same statistic.

Llansawel saw their proud record suffer meltdown at Vivian Park as Aberavon triumphed 7748.

In Division Three, Prince of Wales Hawks swooped twice last week with Cymmer and Aberkenfig the prey.

However, they never really got their claws into visitors Cymmer, and only just flew off with a 61-59 win.

Not for a first time, the star of the show was skip Brian Tucker who laid an 18-10 win on his rink.

But the Hawks then feathered their nest with a comprehensive 113-49 home win over outgunned Aberkenfig.

The high-flying Hawks won on all four rinks with skip Rob Roy becoming a Porthcawl folk hero after triumphing 33-6.

All this led to the Hawks once more ruling the roost – one point ahead with two games in hand over Mount Pleasant.

Mount Pleasant lost ground after suffering a 73-67 defeat at Caerau Athletic but they did manage to salvage two rinks.

The Riverboaters steamed to victory on the back of another key win from boss of the moss Alan Goss, who won 2013.

But there was no joy for Bridgend who went down to a 79-65 defeat at Port Talbot Ynys.

And despite home skip Keith Davies gaining an emphatic 38-4 win, the Caepant Field side carded two rink victories.

And the Bridgend Municipal success story in Division Four continued at Bryncoch on the back of a 61-57 victory.

The issue was settled on the rink headed by D Hodgson, who handed in a 61-57 winning card.

And with table-topping Aberavon Liberal Club Do’s losing 62-50 at home to Port Talbot Municipal, it led to the Newbridge Fields club closing the gap. Second-placed Bridgend Municipal now only trail the Do’s by nine points with both clubs having completed 10 matches.

In Division Five, Cwmavon toppled Prince of Wales Court Eagles off their perch.

The Port Talbot village side won 81-54 at Briton Ferry Town to go four points clear of the Eagles, who have a game in hand.
