COED-Y-MWSTWR

DAVE Archibald fired 41 Stableford points to win the Members Section of Seniors Open Day at Coed-y-Mwstwr.

Another fine turnout that saw 148 competitors tee it up delighted Senior Captain Michael Wegner.

“My thanks go to everyone who made the day such a success, especially Hyundai Cars for their valued support,” he said.

“And special thanks go to weather forecaster Behnaz Azakhgar for the lovely weather.’’

Archibald carded a two on the second hole; went birdie on number nine and matched par on 11 occasions.

Two points back came Kevin Speight who had a spate of pars, amounting to five, while Michael Joyce and another putting genius, Bryn Thomas, came in with 38 points.

Arthur Cole fired 37 points; par was achieved by Maesteg wizard Andrew Cox with Michael Parker penning 35 points along with Phil Davies and Steve Snelling.

Other twos on the day came from Nigel Phillips, Andrew Cox, Cliff Jones and master putter Bryn Thomas.

In the section for visitors, Mond Valley cleaned up with members from the Clydach club taking the top-three places.

The winning score in this category was also 41 points and it came from Peter Simmons ahead of John Lewis (40) and John Richards (37).

Meanwhile, just one of the Graham Butt Trophy quarter-final ties have yet to be decided.

Maesteg wizard Andrew Cox has yet to face big gun D R Cannon, but Jonny McEachen beat Tony Lang 3 & 2.

Former Garw football star Clive Dyke was on the ball against Mal Brooks, shooting a 3 & 2 win, with Mark Raybould accounting for Jerry Devine by the same score.

McEachen will face either Cox or Cannon in the first semi-final with Dyke throwing down the gauntlet to Raybould.

Last Friday’s JointCaptain’s Day might have missed out on the sun, but 48 teams made the most of drab and damp conditions.

Nevertheless proceeds flowed in for this year’s chosen charity – the Children’s Ward at the Prin- cess of Wales Hospital.

“Thanks to those who either took part, gave of their time or donated prizes as it proved another remarkable day” was the verdict of joint-captains Michael Davey and Jan Jones.

One point back came Fairdeal via Kevin Budge, Jake Jones, Andy Legg and Neil Summers on 112, and they finished one point ahead of team Stormin’ Norman Williams with John Carpenter, Donald Knight and master golfer Rumbelow.
