Host club bowls over competitors and visitors
THE prestigious British Isles Ladies Under 25 International Championships came to Bridgend this summer.
Bridgend Municipal Bowling Club hosted the event, attended by teams from England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales.
The championship was the biggest event the club has hosted in its 55-year history.
The opening ceremony was attended by First Min- ister Carwyn Jones and the award-winning Bridgend Male Choir.
Norma Hazzledine, director of international events for Bowls England, said: “This has been the best opening ceremony so far and the singing of the wonderful male voice choir almost made me cry. Well done to everybody.”
Former 15-time world champion bowler Tony Alcock presented the winners’ prizes.
The Welsh team came third behind Scotland and winners England in the fi- nal. The Irish team came in fourth but are now looking forward to hosting the competition next year.
Club spokesman Geoff Caldwell said: “Some of the Irish contingent were so impressed with the tournament organisation and presentation by members of Bridgend Municipal Bowling Club that they ‘took notes’ for some ideas to use back home.”
The club officials were grateful to Bridgend County Borough Council for their help and support leading up to the event.
Geoff added: “Members of the ladies’ section, under the guiding hand of Barbara Caldwell, worked very hard at catering throughout the weekend. It all contributed in making it a huge success.”
