LALESTON, BRYNTIRION, CEFN GLAS & BROADLANDS
Special Birthday: Best Wishes and Congratulations to Mrs Valerie Trimlett, a regular reader at St David’s Church services and member of Penyfai WI, who will be 70 years young on August 9.
Val, a very busy lady and great cake maker, will celebrate this special birthday with husband Henry and all her family.
Laleston Gardening Club: On Saturday, July 16, the second of the summer coach trips organised by Margaret Worgan took place and the destination was Big House Farm at Llanmadoc on the Gower.
The club had visited this farm two years ago and members were able to witness the improvements that the proprietors had made since that time.
The weather was slightly overcast but that did not diminish the enjoyment of the trip and the cream tea provided was one of the best ever.
Margaret has made arrangements for the third of the summer coach trips and the destination will be The Old Rectory, Thruxton, Nr. Abergavenny.
Schedules are now available for the 46th Annual Horticultural Show and Barbeque which takes place on Saturday, September 3.
Pauline Sloan, the Show Secretary has changed the format of all sections this year so it is important for members to pick up their schedules early and consider these alterations.
As usual the Thursday “working party” is busily involved in maintaining and improving the club premises.
Dennis Roberts, Hugh Worgan and Gerwyn Thomas have been working together in order to make Cliff Cottage compliant with all fire safety regulations.
Dave Thomas has been establishing a resource centre in the upstairs room; Ron Hughes, David Oates and helpers have been repairing and repainting the wooden window frames.
Steve Snelling has fitted a new locking system mechanism to the back door and Barbara Thomas and her team of ladies have tended the garden with their usual love and attention.
Special mention should be made of Mary Harris who has undertaken the task of restoring the grave of Miss Sarah Anne Blandy who donated The Blandy Trust Hall (Cliff Cottage) to Laleston in 1910 and died the following year.
The stone cross and plinth had been neglected for many years and was barely visible under the dense growth of ivy, brambles and weeds.
Mary, with the help of Olive Gardner, has cleared the area and the stone cross is now visible from the roadway between the Blandy Trust property and St David’s Church and it is hoped that Miss Blandy’s grave will never again be allowed to succumb to the ivy and brambles.
Laleston Gardening Club owes its existence to this philanthropic lady.
