Kettleborough in Glam Seconds game

-

BRIDGEND Town’s attached player James Kettleborough was involved in an amazing County Second XI Championship that saw Glamorgan lose by an innings and 35 runs to Sussex at Abergavenny, writes Tony Poole.

Sadly, the former Northants opening bat could only contribute nine runs in the first innings and 15 second time around.

But Glamorgan, who won the toss and chose to bat, ran up a formidable score of 348-8 declared off 91 overs.

However, when the score stood on 84-6, it seemed as if they would be fortunate to get 150.

But superb batting from ex-Cowbridge all-rounder Neil Brand, who plays for Neath in the South Wales Premier League, dug them out of trouble.

The Kings College, Taunton product hit 162 off 214 deliveries in 308 minutes, and the innings contained 18 fours.

And in tandem with Owen Morgan, who has recently burst onto the first-class scene, they put on 236 runs for the seventh wicket. Owen contributed a splendid 104 and at stumps on day one, Sussex were 68-1.

But the second day was dominated by a Northants trialist who went on to become a record-breaker – former Leeds/Bradford MCCU captain Christian Davis.

He cracked a magnificent 258 not out (one six, 34 fours off 299 balls in 388 minutes) to register a Sussex 2nd XI record score.

It had stood since the glorious summer of 1976 – when there wasn’t a cloud in the sky leading to water rationing – and Kepler Wessels took 239 off the Kent attack at Eastbourne.

This led to Sussex declaring on 489-9, and they then dismissed Glamorgan for just 106.

Earlier, Bridgend Town all-rounder Sam Pearce was involved for Glamorgan Seconds in a six-wicket loss to Sussex in a OneDay match at St Fagans.

Pearce, batting as low as nine, cracked 28 (one six, two fours off 24 balls) while Kettleborough only made 19.

Brand top scored on 70, as the Welsh county squeezed 249-9 out of 50 allotted overs.

But Sussex got them in the 44th over, scoring 2514, with Pearce returning 10-0-39-2 while others received tap.
