Third time lucky for our Helen?

HELEN Jenkins is hoping it’s a case of third time lucky at the Rio Olympics in Brazil, writes Tony Poole.

The 32-year-old triathlon star, who was born in Elgin but grew up in Bridgend, has previously been involved in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, finishing 21st, while in London four years ago, she came fifth.

But Helen, who is coached by her husband Marc, has been battling injury problems for years.

She lifted British Junior Triathlon title in 2003 ahead of becoming a dual world International Triathlon Union champion in 2008 and 2011.

Injury problems initially surfaced back in 2006 via an Achilles ten- don problem, and then she suffered pain in her ankle.

But ahead of the London Olympics, it was discomfort in a knee that held her back.

Although she was favourite to win gold, fitness let her down and she finished just outside the medal positions.

Then, two years ago it was discovered that it wasn’t a knee that was causing the pain, but her back.

It, however, resulted in her missing the Commonwealth Games of 2014 that were staged in Glasgow.

But for the first time in years, an injury-free Helen could commit to training – and confidence came flooding back.

This formed the background to the World Triathlon Series event in the Gold Coast in April, and it resulted in a stunning win.

She became the first competitor to beat Gwen Jorgenson (USA), who had won her last 13 competitions dating back to 2014.

This superb performance booked Helen a place in Team GB for the Rio Olympics in Brazil that get under way this Friday.

Her team-mates are Non Stanford from Swansea and Vicky Holland (Gloucester).

“The London Olympics were four years ago, and I didn’t think I’d be able to compete again at this level,” said Helen.

“But winning the Gold Coast event this year was a confidence booster, and now it’s a case of me trying my best.’’
