Glamorgan’s ’97 champs reunite
CRICKET
GLAMORGAN cricket followers won’t need reminding of the significance of 1948, 1969 and 1997, writes Tony Poole.
On these three occasions, they won the County Championship and, later this month, the 1997 team is being reunited.
Jim Pleass headed the first success and Tony Lewis, who now lives in Porthcawl, captained the unbeaten team of 1969.
Matthew Maynard led the 1997 side who rounded things off with a victory over Somerset in Taunton.
Now, Maynard is reas- sembling his 1997 heroes and three players with local links – Andrew Davies, Darren Thomas and Steve Watkin – are all involved in a special day at St Fagans on August 19 to raise funds for the Tom Maynard Trust.
The Trust supports the development of young sportspeople through individual grants, educational programmes along with an overseas academy.
Before the 1997 team face St Fagans in a T20 match, a special fundraising lunch is being held with players involved in a question and answer session.
Incredibly, 13 of the 14 players who pulled off the 1997 title are able to attend.
The one who will have the longest journey is former all-rounder Adrian Dale, who now lives in New Zealand.
The only doubt surrounds Waqar Younis, as he has commitments with the current Pakistan tour to these shores.
