KEV KICKS OFF

- With Kevin Ellis

IT WAS fantastic to take part in the Hilary Floyd-Ellis netball tournament last Saturday on a lovely hot day at the tennis club. My niece Victoria and the staff of the club did a superb job organising the event. 14 teams took part. The Black Mambas from Maesteg won the tournament beating the tennis club in the final. MY team was Kev Kings with local legends John Devereux, Allan Bateman, Strongy, Paul Jones, my brother Carle and two super young Welsh U16 netball girls Laurie and Ellie.

We lost in the semifinal 3-1 to the eventual winners. Well done to all the teams. We raised over £2,500 for Velindre Cancer Hospital. The tournament seems to be getting more competitive every year which is how Hilary Floyd-Ellis would have loved it. The tougher the better. See you all next year!

I see the media are saying Ryan Giggs should be the next Wales manager if Chris Coleman leaves to manage a club. There’s lots of speculation about Coleman’s future. I hope he stays has he’s doing a fantastic job but I think the FAW should get Giggs involved to assist Coleman and look to take over after Coleman’s contract expires. We wait and see.

It’s great to see all the teams getting fit and ready for the new season. I’m sure most clubs will be playing their pre-season games soon.

I’m hoping to go up to watch Maesteg against Neath this Saturday with Bateman and Devereux. It’s the opening of the new club house after the fire last year.

Well done to all the teams taking part in the Evs 7s tournament in Tondu. A few friends went to watch and there was a good crowd there and I hope they raised lots for charity.

QUESTION: What do you think about the Scarlets playing Rhys Patchell at outside-half?

Well, he is an outsidehalf so there shouldn’t be a problem. He played a lot at full-back last season and that’s where he played for Wales in New Zealand. I think with Dan Biggar off his game, the 10 jersey is up for grabs and Patchell’s a good young player.
