Wedding Bells: Wedding Bells rang out at Nolton Church last Friday, August 5 at the marriage of Francesca Martin of Ystrad Fawr and Rhys Evans of Maesteg.

The wedding reception was held at the Coed y Mwster Hotel and the couple’s new home is at Cefn Coed, Cefn Glas.

Congratulations and Best Wishes for a great future together from staff and pupils of Bryntirion Infants School where Francesca is a teacher.

40TH Birthday: Surprise, Surprise ! There were surprises all around for friend Lucy Rees of Bridgend who celebrated her 40th birthday on August 4 with a surprise trip to Berlin with husband Steve.

This was followed with a surprise party at Cabe Rocho when they returned on Saturday.

Friends and family were there to greet her including Mum, Barbara and the couple’s young sons Evan and Isaac who all enjoyed the occasion.

Laleston Gardening Club: Visitors to Cliff Cottage will notice that some major improvements have taken place in recent weeks.

The pathway and drive surrounding Cliff Cottage has been broken up and relaid with fresh concrete to provide a safe and level access to the building.

The previous surface had been a trip hazard for users of the club and the committee had been concerned about the situation for some time.

The external door to the main hall has been replaced to improve wheelchair access and is fitted internally with a panic bolt to allow a quick exit in the event of a fire.

LED lighting is being installed to illuminate the pathway leading to this door, providing safe access for wheelchair users and others during the dark evenings.

Funding for these improvements has been provided by BAVO (Bridgend Association Of Voluntary Organisations) who have administered the monies made available from the Suncredit Solar Farm, and Laleston Community Council has also made a generous contribution.

BAVO is an organisation based in Maesteg who help local community groups secure grant aid for suitable projects and Laleston Gardening Club has had reason to be grateful to them in the recent past.

In 2015 with the help of BAVO, the club were able to qualify for a grant from the Welsh Church Act Fund of 50% towards the cost of rebuilding the old stone shed and reinventing it as a garden store for members.

Grant funding from organisations such as BAVO and Laleston Community Council, together with funds from their own resources has enabled the Gardening Club to continuously improve Cliff Cottage, this beautiful Grade II listed building.

Members of the Gardening Club were saddened to hear that Joan Rule had passed away on Sunday, July 24 after a very short illness.

Joan had served on the committee for many years and was Assistant Secretary from 1998 - 2014. She was a popular member and always took a keen interest in club affairs.
