Hundreds of dogs have their day - at the beach

HUNDREDS of dachshunds and their owners went on a mass walk on the beach on Saturday despite the summer weather taking a turn for the worse.

The walk was held at Ogmore-by-Sea and the fun day also saw sausage dogs competing for titles including the best-dressed dachshund, waggiest tail, and cutest puppy.

Organiser Charlotte Baldwin had hoped to go for a Guinness Book of Records world record for the most dogs of one breed in one place but has delayed the bid until next summer.

Charlotte, who runs the group Sausage Dog Walks South Wales, said: “We will definitely do it next year.

“It’s been approved by the Guinness Book of records so all we need to do is organise it.”

Ahead of the walk, dog owners from Scotland, Stoke, Dorset, Devon, and Shropshire planned to be there.

For anyone who was expecting the cuteness overload, it was a welcome sight but some beach-goers were taken by surprise.

Twitter user Sam said: “We’ve come to the beach and there’s hundreds of people here with sausage dogs.”

The event took place between 11am and 6pm with the walk starting at 4pm and admission was priced £5 for a family ticket.

More than 500 dachshunds and their owners joined Charlotte’s festive sausage dog walk in Porthcawl last Christmas and other smaller walks, including one on Barry Beach, also proved popular.
