Beach-goers urged to plan ahead

-

BEACH users have been urged to check tide times and plan walks after two people had to be rescued.

The pair became stranded at the foot of cliffs near Southerndown on Thursday, August 18, as the tide came in.

The RNLI in Porthcawl said numerous people made 999 calls to the Coastguard as the pair began trying to climb a rock fall to escape the water coming into Temple Bay.

The Porthcawl crew was paged at 6.24pm and launched both the D class Jean Ryall and relief Atlantic 85 Malcolm and Mona Bennett-Williams.

Helmsman on the Atlantic 85, Chris Page said: “Once on scene, we transferred one of our crew to the D Class to assist in helping the casualties aboard and to secure the lifeboat as there was a large swell running in the area at the time.

“With the casualties safely off the beach and on board, they were then transferred to the larger Atlantic 85 lifeboat and brought ashore at Porthcawl lifeboat station as we considered it unsafe to land them at Southerndown due to the conditions on the slipway there.

“Neither casualty required medical assistance so they were later returned by land to Southerndown by Llantwit Major Coastguard Unit, who also assisted in the incident.”

Lifeboat operations manager Phil Missen urged people to check tide times and plan walks well.
