SPORTS clubs in the Llynfi Valley are set to get a share of more than £10,000 in a bid to make the population healthier.

The money is being invested into grassroots sport thanks to the Community Chest scheme.

Managed locally by Bridgend County Borough Council and agreed by a panel of volunteers with support from Sports Wales and National Lottery funding, the scheme provides up to £1,500 to help sports clubs and organisations get more people taking part.

Bridgend council said the Llynfi Valley is a key area of focus for improving health and wellbeing after Public Health Wales reported that people living in the area have approximately 20 years less healthy life expectancy compared to the rest of Bridgend county borough.

The Community Chest funding will support the objectives of the Llynfi 20 project, led by Bridgend Association of Voluntary Organisations and partners such as the council, to raise awareness of how people can help improve their own wellbeing.

The area has already seen £205,526 of Community Chest funding since the scheme began in 1999, which has been awarded to help develop 25 sports and activities in the area.

Councillor Phillip White said: “We are delighted to see a large number of sports clubs in the Llynfi Valley being awarded this much-needed funding. We hope this will provide more opportunities for people to participate in physical activities within their local area and help the clubs to promote themselves, engage with local people and gain new members.”
