GROVE

JOHN Carpenter and Colin Rumbelow last week picked up honours in the Glamorgan County Senior Championships that were staged at The Grove.

Master golfer Rumbelow won the gross category in the 60-64 age group while Carpenter hammered home a victory in the over-70s Stableford event.

Fine conditions out on the South Cornelly course were greatly appreciated by competitors – as was a flat terrain.

Keith Stimpson of the Wenvoe Castle club retained the overall title, but this time around he was pushed all the way by Russell Adams (Pyle & Kenfig).

Results were as follows:

Championship: Keith Stimpson (Wenvoe Castle).

Stableford: Russell Morris (Pyle & Kenfig) ahead of Mark Collier (Wenvoe Castle), Ed Morgan (Swansea Bay), Rumbelow (Grove).

55-59 age category: Gross: Mark Collier, Stableford: Adams

60-64 age category: Gross: Rumbelow (Grove), Stableford: Mike D’Angeli (Mond Valley).

65-69 age category: Gross: Stimpson, Stableford: Morgan (Swansea Bay).

70+ category: Gross: Nigel Evans (Cardiff), Carpenter (Grove).

Meanwhile, Wyn Dredge and Gwyn Parkhouse hit form with a vengeance to lift the Senior Section’s Grand Hotel Cup.

Dredge, the former Maudlam cricket star, and Parkhouse won the event on 36 points, finishing one point in front of Gwyn Jones and Dennis Redwood.

However, the day after a weary Dredge found Coed-y-Mwstwr a different kettle of fish, and wished he’d forked out for a buggy.

In Senior club matches, Grove defeated visitors St Mary’s 5-3; lost 5.5 – 2.5 at Vale Resort while tomorrow they host Gower.

On the club Ladies scene, Jayne Jones lifted the Fairways Cup on the strength of productive round of 39 Stableford points.

She went birdie over the pond on number 11, and collected four pars to win the tournament by four points from Faye Ashman.

Sue Bishop came third with 34 points, and one point in arrears was Beth Lees and Susan James.

Pauline Morgan registered 32 points; Sonia Peters and Margaret Rogers both got 31 points out of their rounds with Sheila Stubbs and Irene Hopkins hitting the 30-point mark.

ST MARY’S

A KEY two on the 14th green led to Dave Thomas winning an August Stableford competition at St Mary’s.

His winning card also contained four pars, and he just sustained the challenge of fast-finishing Gareth Moore.

However, a two on the home hole allied to six pars failed to take him past Thomas, and Moore settled for 38 points.

Martin Clements achieved par 36 for third place while Gary Donnachie had his moments on a card worth 35 points.

The former Tondu cricket star escaped Alcatraz (number 10) with a two; birdied the fourth only to rue three blobs.

Fifth-placed Lewis Jenkins bagged a two on hole 14 in 34 points with Martin Brown hitting the same mark.

Adam Jury was judged on 33 points, as was Anthony Nihan, with six players one point further back – Neil Channell, Ralph Thatcher, Richard Evenden, Lee Jefford, Howard Littlejohn and Jonny Williams.

LAKESIDE

FRANK Byng will take a decent advantage into the next round of the Senior Captain’s Cup at the Lake- side club in Margam.

Playing off a 22 handicap, Byng matched par seven times in running up a toasty score of 42 Stableford points in the first round of the competition.

Six points back came regular winner Nicky Walters with John Kinsey (two on penultimate hole) also recording par.

Cliff Richards hit the right notes to finish fourth with 35 points, and his praises were sung via five pars.

Top cricket umpire Peter Watkins was bowled over with 35 points (two on hole 17) with Wyn Richards and Derek Pitt digging 34 points out of their rounds.

Bobby Hazzard got 31 points with Brian Channell and Alun Thomas the other players to reach 30 points.
