Peet turns on the style for Wales U16s

-

THE Royal Porthcawl winner of this year’s Amateur Championship, Scott Gregory, last week turned in a sound display in the 116th US Amateur Championship at Oakland Hills Country Club in Michigan, writes Tony Poole.

Gregory bowed out on the first extra hole at the last-32 stage to losing semi-finalist Nick Carlson (Hamilton, Michigan).

But David Boote, a 22-year-old Stanford player with Welsh heritage, reached the quarterfinals only to lose 3&2 against Brad Dalke (Oklahoma).

Boote, who lifted the Welsh Amateur title last summer, is an aspiring professional golfer.

Dalke reached the 36-hole final only to lose 6&4 against 20-year-old Australian Curtis Luck after it was all square at the halfway stage.

But Luck, who plays out of the Cottesloe club in Perth, won an incredible eight successive holes early in the second round.

He became only the second Australian to win the championship, and succeeds USA star Bryson DeChambeau, who started well out on the PGA Tour but just missed out on a card.

BOYS U16 INTERNATIONAL

YOUNG Tom Peet of Pyle & Kenfig turned in some rousing displays for Wales U16 during a 15-5 defeat against their England counterparts at Newport.

At just 14 years of age, he was the youngest player in the tournament, but this failed to deter him.

And his demeanour out on the golf course was a credit to both his family and club.

It also suggested that he’s destined to win regular international selection.

But unfortunately, Welsh performances and team spirit wasn’t reflected in the final scoreline.

On day one, Tom lost his singles match to Dominic Clemons 5&3 only to bounce back in the afternoon Foursomes alongside James Ashfield.

They gained a onehole win over Clemons and Connor Gough and on the final day, Tom went down to a narrow defeat on the final green against Matt Freeman.
