Cornelly disappointed to miss out on points

-

TREFOREST .................. 3 CORNELLY UNITED ..... 1

CORNELLY United felt they did enough to depart Treforest with a point, writes Tony Poole.

Two teams who last season were members of the Premier Division, provided lively entertainment. However, during the summer, the White Tips side made a big statement in signing free-scoring Chris Colvin from Welsh League Division Three club Treharris Athletic Western.

And although the Meadow Street boys did the first part right in opening the scoring early in the second half, they were then sunk by three goals.

During the early stages, Cornelly opened up the home defence on regular occasions without disturbing the scoreboard.

It was goal-less at the changeover and during the second period, the Cornelly duo of Rhys Alden and Dann Jones were composed on the ball.

And with Jake Roche impacting down the left flank, this was the source of the Cornelly goal.

Alden, Dann Jones and Roche took significant touches before Callum Jones hit the target on the edge of the six-yard box.

But the lead was shortlived, as a Colvin shot deflected off Michael Wilson and gently lobbed Lakeside golf star Sammy Jones in the Cornelly goal.

Two minutes later, another Treforest import, Josh Evans (Llantwit Fardre), scored following a bout of penalty area pinball.

During the closing stages, the Meadow Street boys went 3-5-2 in a bid to secure a point.

And the ploy looked to have paid off when hardworking Chris Mitchell netted only to have it ruled out for off side.

A Roche effort shaved a post, but Cornelly were then caught on the break and Colvin scored again.

Zero points from two opening league matches at a lower level doesn’t represent a great start.

But there were enough encouraging signs at White Tips to suggest Cornelly can improve. And they received further encouragement when Shay Jones put pen to paper at Meadow Street.
