Betws receive free passage in cup

-

BETWS last weekend received a free passage through to the next round of the JD Welsh Cup, writes Tony Poole.

The former Welsh League champions were due to host Swansea League side C P Suburbs in the first preliminary round.

But last Friday night, club chairman Dave Simons received a call from C P Suburbs informing him that they were unable to raise a team.

However, initial disappointment that they were without a game was tempered by the wet and windy conditions that prevailed last Saturday.

Earlier in the week, Betws failed to get off the mark in Highadmit South Wales Alliance Premier Division, going down 2-0 against Baglan Dragons at North Site.

Two goals during the first half got the Dragons breathing fire, and they took the lead via a John Parfitt penalty.

A further goal from Harrison Radford sent them clear, and they went on to close out the win.

Last night, Betws were due to entertain former Welsh League colleagues Cardiff Corries in a league fixture.

Both sides were last season relegated from Welsh League Division Three, and they are now coming to terms with life in the Alliance.

And on Saturday, they are away to another former Welsh League club, Llantwit Fardre, in the Premier Division.

Last Saturday, Llantwit Fardre exited the Welsh Cup at STM Sports, going down 2-0.

Goalkeeper Jonny Davies has been appointed Betws captain, as the North Site club celebrate their 60th anniversary.
