Bont and Barry play out a real no-goal bore

-

back of a midweek Nathaniel Cars League Cup exit to Aberbargoed Buds at Ystrad Mynach.

They had also lost their league opener at Ton Pentre and the hope was the green grass of home via the Kymco Stadium magic carpet might impact.

But against last season’s league runners-up, they gave it their best shot without opening up a defence that hasn’t conceded in league or cup this term.

Manager Rhys Griffiths, who added his name to the list of substitutes, brought Thomas Atyeo into the heart of defence.

But once more the Bridgend super club looked light up top with Marcus Griffiths again posing the main threat.

Though the Bont defence did come under the cosh, Mattie Jones, James Parry, Kane Owen and Atyeo maintained composure.

And while most of the 100 plus fans could read between the lines and see a 0-0 scoreline was inevitable, Bont finished strongly.

Griffiths had a shot well saved by goalkeeper Mike Lewis, who last season helped Bont out on a temporary basis.

And in the 85th minute, Barry got flustered at the back with midfield operator Kieran Howard taking aim from the edge of the box.

But his well-struck effort clipped the base of a post, and with it went any chance of Bont collecting all three points.

And with their League Cup aspirations already at an end, Bont aren’t involved in this week’s second round ties.

They now take a trip into the unknown this Saturday at newly-promoted Undy Athletic, who along with Haverfordwest County and Caldicot, are the only pointless Division One clubs.

The only time the clubs have met was two seasons ago when Undy triumphed 1-0 in the League Cup at the Kymco Stadium.

Penybont: Rhys Wilson, Matthew Jones, Kane Owen, Kieran Howard, Tom Atyeo, James Parry, Adam Carpenter, Cullen Kinsella, Joe Hopkins, Marcus Griffiths, Connor Goldsworthy (Kyran Gardner 60).

Unused substitutes: Aaron Jones (goalkeeper), Ioan Emanuel, Shaun Barney-Williams, Rhys Griffiths.
