Invasion of the monster trucks

MORE than 2,000 people descended on Porthcawl for the town’s second annual truck gathering at the weekend.

Despite terrible weather on Saturday, more than £3,000 was raised on Coney Beach for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution and other local charities.

The event was started by trucker Graham B Edwards last year.

He said: “I am definitely going to do it again, every driver has promised to come back next year. We got a couple of thousand people down. It is all about having a good time even if it’s raining.

“We haven’t counted all the money yet but so far we have collected over £3,000. That will all go to RNLI and local charities.

“Last year, we had nine days to prepare and started with 50 trucks. This year we had six months to get ready and had over 200.

“I am sad it’s over. Loads of people were there including local trad- ers but I want to thank Darran Galvin and his father Royston for all their help.”

Graham had the idea two years ago when he was at Hereford Truck show. The aim was to create an event that children would enjoy.

“The most popular with the kids was either the Eddie Stobart or army trucks,” said Graham.

“The army lads had a wonderful time and they were good as gold with the kids who were climbing all over their green trucks.”

It wasn’t just trucks at the show. There was also music and an auction following donations from local businesses.

Graham said: “I went out and badgered companies. They all donated money or gifts.”

This year was four times bigger than 2015 with 50 trucks rolled into town to raise money for Ty Hafan children’s hospice.
