Coast Art and Craft Group Exhibition: The group launched their annual Exhibition in the Cafe Bar of the Grand Pavilion last Tuesday.

There was a good crowd of members and guests there to see the Mayor and Mayoress of Porthcawl, Councillor Rob Lee and his wife Ann open the exhibition which will remain on display until Monday, November 14.

The quality is extremely high and the exhibition is well worth a visit.

Porthcawl U3A: As part of the series of monthly lectures organized for U3A members here in Porthcawl, the September lecture was given by Gary Victor the chairman of Shout Forum on the tragic loss of the Samtampa and the Mumbles Lifeboat on the night of the 23rd April 1947.

U3A is a remarkable organization and the Porthcawl Branch is one of the strongest in Wales, and as an aside I was delighted to see Doug Jones’ wife Dorothy sufficiently recovered from her operation to be present at the lecture.

This very successful series of lectures arranged by Andrew Collier from U3A on the various voluntary organizations in the town concludes with a discussion evening on Friday, September 23 again at the Y Centre in John Street on Voluntary Organisations and Activities in Porthcawl starting at 7.15pm. Admission is free and there will be coffee and tea provided (donations appreciated.)

An indication of numbers would be helpful to Clare 772166 or Andrew on 01656 784939.

Table Top Sale: Now that the Lions Car Boot Sale has been withdrawn for the winter, a new Table Top Sale has been arranged on Sunday mornings in the Y-Centre. This is open from 9am-1pm with buyers having. Admission is free. For sellers it’s £5 a pitch.

Lions Club Open Day: This year the Porthcawl Lions are holding their Open Day on Saturday, September 17 at Trinity Church in John Street. Everyone is welcome; take your friends, enjoy a chat and a cuppa. There are presently 34 members in Porthcawl Lions and who knows you might help to increase that number. Contact Andrew Collier on 01656 78493.

The Marcher Stuarts: Porthcawl Museum will be having an Open Day on Saturday, September 17 with a Porthcawl in the 17th Century theme.

This was a time when Newton was a thriving port and the museum has arranged for a visit by the Marcher Stuarts who are a 17th century Living History Group of friendly folks who entertain and hopefully educate the public while enjoying themselves.

They will practice their crafts and games quietly or make lots of noise with muskets, hook guns, blunderbus and canon; perhaps kill a witch or two, shoot arrows, brandish swords and generally have a busy and enjoyable time!

Horticultural Society Trip: The Porthcawl Horticultural Society has organised their penultimate trip of the season to Bourton House in Gloucestershire for Thursday, September 29.

Teas will be available and lunch will be taken in Morton in the Marsh. The cost is £15, and the trip leaves West Road Bus Shelter at 9am (although it may be 10 minutes early) and then it will stop at all the usual stops here in Porthcawl. For details and tickets contact Bon Marche in John Street.

Next month sees one of the highlights of the season when the trip will be to the Westonburt Arboretum, again in Gloucestershire. This is on Wednesday, October 26, and the cost is £15.

Waste Wood Recycling Facility Plans: The people of Cornelly who oppose this proposal have arranged a meeting tonight Wednesday, September 14, at the Grand Pavilion to present their case to the people of Porthcawl.

South Wales Wood Recycling Plant and their advisers have been asked to attend, and should they accept then our First Minister, Carwyn Jones AM has agreed to chair the meeting.

Should the applicant not attend, then other arrangements will have to be made to chair the meeting, but it will still go ahead at 7.30pm in the main hall. If we love this town and most of us do; then it is in all our interests to attend.

Male Choir Concert: This was held last Saturday and the guest soloist was Wynne Evans. The choir were, as usual under their musical director, Mair Jones and the compere was past mayor Evan Williams. All in all it was a great night, enjoyed by the packed audience which included the mayors of Porthcawl and Bridgend County Borough Council.
