Penybont ladies crash to defeat at Caldicot

CALDICOT TOWN ......... 3 PENYBONT .................... 2

PENYBONT Ladies weren’t on the buses at the right time, and crashed to a Division One defeat at Caldicot Town, writes Tony Poole.

The team arrived late – owing to buses going to wrong destinations – and some players missed the start.

Blaengarw cricket star Rebecca Struthers and flying wing Lisa Starling came into the side and they saw Caldicot take an immediate lead.

But just like buses, another goal soon followed – and this one had the name of Bont on the ticket.

Briony DeMott cottoned on to a massive Sam Jackson goal kick and she shot across the goalkeeper and into the corner of goal.

Soon after, DeMott just missed out with another on target shot, but she went on to give the Bont girls a 20th-minute lead.

This time, she got on the end of an Ashton Morgan cross and another sumptuous finish duly unfolded.

Morgan then thought she had made it 3-1 but the referee mustered a bizarre off-side decision.

By hook or by crook they clung on to the 2-1 lead but an injury to DeMott resulted in her not appearing for the second half.

Gemma Harris took her place and won some early aerial battles while Hannah Whittingham made a debut appearance.

But, significantly, Bont were now coming under the cosh and became stretched at the back.

And Caldicot produced an 80th-minute equaliser from a generous free-kick with the winner knocked in late on.

This Sunday, Penybont Ladies are away to Caerphilly Castle and will be without midfield ace Rebecca Smith, who is getting married in Turkey.
