FC PORTHCAWL ........... 6 BRYN ROCKETS ............ 0

FC PORTHCAWL put a rocket under Bryn to continue an unbeaten start to the season, writes Tony Poole.

After two matches, only FC Porthcawl, Tata Steel, Margam Youth Centre and Cwmavon still possess unbeaten tags.

Brighter skies greeted fans than during the stormy weather experienced during the win over Newton Wanderers – but it was Bryn who rocketed out of the starting blocks.

The Rockets fired on the back of some ex-Trefelin and Tata Steel men and they stretched Porthcawl at the back.

During the warm up, goalkeeper Connor Jones was injured and manager Jon McCarthy handed the gloves to Jordan Pugh.

But it wasn’t long before Porthcawl cranked up the machinery with Andrew Bowden, Joe McCarthy, Evan Jones and James Harris bringing out the best in Pugh’s opposite number.

Dewi Owen, Adam Jones along with captain Will Owen grounded the Rockets and they had the lead before half time.

Karl Cornock, Mark Astrauskas and James Brown set up man-of-the-match Bowden to score from an acute angle.

His strike separated the sides at the turnaround and during the second period, Porthcawl upped the ante.

Astrauskas and Bowden created an opening for Joe McCarthy to make it eight goals in as many Green Machine matches.

That was the straw that broke the camel’s back, and Bryn soon conceded another after Brown set up a second McCarthy goal.

Bryn then had a chance to pull one back from the penalty spot only for Pugh to guess correctly - and it remained 3-0.

Substitute Alex Treharne carved out the next goal for Brown and James Harris made it 5-0 via a superb solo goal.

Close to time, a Bowden shot was beaten out but on-song Andy Williams was on hand to complete the scoring.

This Saturday, FC Porthcawl welcome former Welsh League club Gwynfi United to Rest Bay.
