FAW TROPHY

BONYMAEN COLTS ...... 1 PENCOED ATHLETIC ... 5

ONCE Pencoed Athletic adjusted to the higher altitude in Bonymaen, they galloped to victory over the Colts, writes Tony Poole.

But to make progress into the third round of the FAW Trophy, the Felindre Road boys had to come from a goal behind.

In what was essentially a fine team performance, the standout display came from Kyle Owen.

After conceding the early goal, Pencoed steadied the ship and once they got back on terms and went ahead, there was only going to be one winner.

It was a case of one-way traffic towards the home goal and Pencoed scored at regular intervals to see off the Bony boys.

Rhys Thomas led the way with a hat-trick and strikes also went against the names of Marc Turner and Griff Williams.

And the reward for Pencoed in the next round is a home pairing on October 15 with Morriston Olympic.

In a delayed tie, Morriston Olympic last weekend gained a 3-0 home victory over Ynystawe after extra time.

This Saturday, Pencoed resume duties in Highadmit South Wales Alliance Premier Division with a home fixture against Llantwit Fardre.

Turning to the Celtic Tyres Bridgend & District League Division One, Pencoed triumphed 3-0 at Carne Rovers.

In a first league win of the season, Pencoed benefitted from Carne being reduced to 10 men.

When numbers were equal, there wasn’t that much to chose between the sides.

But the red card turned the tide in favour of the Felindre Road boys who carded a first league win at the third attempt with Matt Bowen, James King and Rhys Loosemore the marksmen.
