BRIDGEND YOUNG CARERS: President OJ Paton of Bridgend Lions Club presented a cheque in the sum of £500 to the Bridgend Young Carers at Brackla Family Centre on Monday, September 26. The Young Carers Practitioner Gemma Rees was in attendance and delighted to accept this generous donation. The group with Gemma was aged 8-12 years but there are other groups who visit the centre aged 13-15 years and 15-18 years who all care for either siblings or parents in the borough council area.

LALESTON GARDENING CLUB: Members are reminded that the new programme of lectures will start at Cliff Cottage on Monday, October 10 at the usual time of 7.30pm. Ivor Mace is a favourite of the club and he will give a talk entitled “Composts,

Fertilisers and Manures”. Ivor is well-versed in soil chemistry and will discuss the relative merits of all the products on the market, including those that are available to members in the club’s own not-for-profit store (The Cabin).

Apart from December there will be monthly lectures up to and including June of next year, with all details appearing on the membership cards. Membership has been due for renewal since the annual show on September 3 and new members are welcome to join at any of the lectures or whenever the “working party” is present at Cliff Cottage (Thursdays and Saurdays 10-12noon). The lectures are always sociable events and invariably the lecturers stay behind to answer questions and enjoy a cup of tea.

Another significant date for the diary is Friday, October 14 when the AGM takes place in Cliff Cottage at 7.30pm. This is the occasion when reports are presented by the president, chairman, treasurer and the show secretary – currently Margaret Worgan, Glan Hathaway, Paul Jones and Pauline Sloan respectively. Elections take place to determine who will serve as officers and general committees for the forthcoming year. At last year’s AGM Joyce Pegg, Dave Thomas and Gerwyn Thomas were newly elected to the general committee and Paul Jones was elected as the new treasurer. Each of these individuals has made a meaningful contribution to the life of Laleston Gardening Club and the committee has benefitted from the introduction of new blood. Joyce has served as assistant show secretary to Pauline Sloan, Dave is busy using his skills to establish a resource centre at the club, Gerwyn has demonstrated that he has a wide range of DIY skills and Paul has not only been meticulous with the club’s finances but he has also been instrumental in securing the funding for the recent improvements around Cliff Cottage. This has involved liaising with Dave of BAVO (Bridgend Assoc of Voluntary Organisation) who has administered the monies made available by Suncredit Solar Farm and there has been a supplementary grant from Laleston Community Council.

The AGM is an important meeting on the calendar of Laleston Gardening Club and it is hoped that there will be a good attendance.
