ROYAL PORTHCAWL

-

BARRIE MELHUISH shot a nett 75 to win a September Medal competition at Royal Porthcawl, writes Tony Poole.

Birdies on holes 10 and 17 helped to set up a winning score of 86-11-75 ahead of low gross scorer Richard Disley 80-5-75 (12 pars).

Michael Cahill carded a two on the seventh green in 83-8-75 for third-place honours with Philip Gwyther firing 10 pars in a round of 81-6-75.

Bleddyn Taylor came fifth – he shot 81-5-76 – with D L Roberts signing for 87-10-77, and nearly man Brian Nicholas 8811-77. Final with Cheryl Western unable to defend her title against young Fauve Birch.

In a high-class final it was the third occasion for the Glamorgan County champion to take home the major silverware.

And the Rosser Cup Foursomes produced a hole in one on the 12th green with John David paying for the clubhouse drinks.

Partnered by his son Sean they defeated disc jockey and comedian Owen Money and Les Crole.

The oldest piece of silverware on the club scene, the Graham Bowl, is now in the possession of Russell Adams, who defeated David Jones in the final.

And John Stone received a tonic after defeating pharmacist Justin Reed in the Sker Salver that’s open to the 16 players who missed out on the closing stages of the club championship.

Claire Morris went through the gears to gain a narrow victory in the Hayes Cup over Alison Hurry with Alison Evans triumphant in the Bronze Championship.

The Lipscomb Cup – for members with handicaps of 15 and over and open to all age groups – was won by sprightly 83-yearold Arwyn John, who still plays off a respectable 17.

In the Junior Finals, there were mixed fortunes for the Peet brothers.

Though Sam Peet lost on the home green in the Matchplay Cup to Cornelly footballer Kieran Tantum, elder brother Tom defeated Ioan Consitt to become Junior club champion for a first time.

Finally, the Junior Sec- tion continues to go from strength to strength.

Brothers Sam and Tom Peet, Sean David, Brodi Lewis and Emilie Lewis have all won favour with GUW selectors at various times this year.

The section has also expanded with 70 young golfers participating in this enjoyable but, at times, frustrating game of ours.

And with this in mind, work on the development of the new short course has begun in earnest.

In last week’s Terns Stableford, John Davies mounted the winner’s rostrum on the back of a 38-point return.

He holed out for two on the sixth green and birdied the third and six counts of par also played a major part in the victory.

Runner-up Nigel LewisDavidson carded seven magnificent pars in 35 points to finish one in front of Paul Wilby (two on 15).

Raymond Tucker signed for 33 points and Richard Kerr 31.

A Senior Section Stableford proved a tight affair with Ian Jones emerging with the win on 34 points.

He drained a putt for two on the sixth green, and this played a key part in his victory march.

Michael Daniels went birdie on hole 11 and matched par five times in shooting 33 points for runner-up honours.

Arwyn John was one of four contestants to sign for 31 points – the others were big hitter Michael Holland, Alan Hyde and Dr Vivian Thomas – while Chris Cole fired 29 points.
