PETER ASHMAN shot a nett 67 to win the Senior Section’s Autumn Plate at Coed-y-Mwstwr.

In wet conditions out on the Bryn Road course, five pars and 10 bogeys did the trick, and he won by one shot over promising Jim Lewis (90-22-68).

Seniors Captain Michael Wegner carded 9425-69 with Byron Cox firing the best gross score of the day via 82-13-69 and garnished it with seven pars.

David B Ford-Williams motored on to 86-17-69, and further down the scoreboard came Jonny McEachen (82-12-70) and D R Cannon who fired 9120-71.

The other top-10 finishers were Eddie D Taylor (94-22-72), John Jones (83-11-72) and Ron Ewing, who jetted in from Dallas to shoot 93-21-71.

Only two birdie putts for two were sunk and they came from Kenneth James on hole eight and Philip Davies on the 11th. time of late, but on this occasion he registered a tournament low gross score of 78-12-66.

He personifie­d steady golf – highlighte­d by 10 pars and eight bogeys – and had three shots in hand over Joe Lacey (7910-69).

Edwin Channell secured third place with 8715-72, and the same mark was hit by John Thomas (99-27-72) and John Carpenter 87-15-72 with a birdie on 10.

The other top-10 positions were occupied by Paul Clark (86-12-74), Neil Jones (90-15-75), Kevin Budge (86-11-75), Tommy Hawkins (94-19-75) and Kenneth Godwin (88-1375).

And John Carpenter nailed the Senior’s Bogey Cup with a score of -1 to finish one ahead of master golfer Colin Rumbelow and John Thomas.

The final Senior club fixture under the baton of captain John Dacey, ended in a 5.5 – 2.5 victory for Grove over visiting Dinas Powys.

In the last of the summer wine, Grove Seniors played some good golf against Jeff Johnston’s side ahead of delightful clubhouse hospitalit­y.

Yesterday (Tuesday) the Senior Section were in pairs mode for a Greensomes Balls competitio­n.

Captain’s Day at the South Cornelly club was packed with good golf, and the 0-9 handicap section went to Dan Evans with 39 points ahead of Craig Jones and ex-Lakeside captain Gary Tamlyn, who both amassed 38 points.

The other sectional results were as follows:

10-18 handicaps: Mark Edwards 42 points, David Thomas 41, Kenneth Bale 40.

19-28 handicaps: Scott Corbett 36, Tony Care 35, Wayne Davies 34.

Ladies: Gemma Fenton 31, Vicky Ford and Mel Williams both 26. Juniors: Ben Lacey 30. Nearest the pins produced wins for Rhys Williams (0-9), Martin Evans (10-18), Scott Corbett (19-28) and Ben Lacey ( Juniors).

Longest drives went to: Craig Jones (0-9), Andrew Morton (10-18), Carl Evans (19-28) and Gemma Fenton (Ladies).

Grove Ladies Medal 11 was won by former captain Vicky Ford, who went through the gears to motor on to 101-27-74.

Runner-up Deidre Ralph shot 114-30-84 and Gemma Fenton 102-1587.

Medal 12 went to Jayne Jones via 97-18-79 with a superb birdie on hole five proving the highlight in her winning round.

Lock’s Commoner Melanie Williams signed for 111-26-85 and Beth Lees 116-30-86.

Grove were last week bowled over to host the annual Golf Day of Tata Steel Cricket Club.

Plenty of runs were made at birdies, especially by television rugby pundit Sean Holley, who hit 38 Stableford points to take the Members section.

Darryl Richards stumped his opponents in taking the main Singles tournament on the back of 48 points.

And Kevin Bartle and his merry men rattled up a score of 119 points to run out winners of the Team competitio­n.
