Pencoed’s great start continues

-

ABERAVON GREEN STARS ............................. 3 PENCOED .................... 59

PENCOED continued their good start to the season with this comprehensive victory at Aberavon.

The home side opened the scoring with a penalty goal before a dominant Pencoed scrum set up the platform for their opening try, prop forward Kieron Moore driving over following the ensuing lineout, Adam Williams converting.

Pencoed soon increased their lead with Rhys Vowles and Christian Powell making the initial inroads before the “threes” moved the ball wide and full back Tom Cross floated a well judged pass to wing Jamie Dyer who crossed in the corner, Williams converted.

Cross was soon again in the picture. straightening on to a pass from centre Lloyd Bargery to race over, Williams adding the extras. Pencoed increased their lead following good approach work and outside half Williams fed Jamie Pensom, the centre doing well to take the final tackle and reach out to get the touchdown, Williams converted and Pencoed led 3-28.

The ball was then moved through several pairs of hands from the restart and scrum half Kyle Barrett timed his pass well and Williams crossed in the corner. Pencoed were now playing with abandon and Cross triggered off a handling move featuring forwards and backs from some 70 metres out for wing David Young to apply the finish, Williams converted and Pencoed led 3-40 at the break.

With the home side reduced in number the second half started with passive scrums and as is so often the case the complexion of the match changed somewhat, although Pencoed continued with the same endeavour. Dyer opened the second half scoring, latching onto a loose home clearance for his second try, Williams converting. Despite valiant home efforts Pencoed added further tries from Rhys Clarke and Dan Watkins, a Williams conversion bringing the final scoreline of 3-59.

On Saturday Pencoed have a bye in the 1st round of the Swalec Plate.
