Barry or bust for Bont

-

FOOTBALL

PENYBONT have been paired away against Barry Town United in a cracking JD Welsh Cup secondround tie, writes Tony Poole.

The Bridgend super club, who triumphed 3-1 over AFC Porth in the previous round last Saturday, will visit Jenner Park on November 4/5/6.

The clubs have already met in the Nathaniel Cars Welsh League Division One this season, playing out a goal-less draw at the Kymco Stadium.

The last time Bont visited Jenner Park was last December when a Ricardo Hodge strike set up a 1-0 league win over the Dragons.

But during their glory days the old Barry Town club lifted the Welsh Cup six times – the first time came in 1955 and the last occasion 2003.

With home advantage Barry will go into the tie as favourites but if Rhys Griffiths’s side find their best form, then it might end up a tight call.

Barry experienced few problems last Saturday in pulling off a 5-0 cup win over Aberbargoed Buds at the Ystrad Mynach Stadium.

Meanwhile, should Caerau prevail on Saturday – in a delayed first-round tie at seconddivision Cwmamman United – their reward is a trip to first-division Caldicot Town in the next round.

But with Caldicot currently propping up the Division One table, the Riverboaters might well fancy their chances of pulling off a cup upset.

And Llantwit Major, who like Caerau are unbeaten in Division Three this term, will welcome Llandrindod Wells to Windmill Lane.

This will represent a trip into the unknown for the Seasiders, who swept to a 6-2 success at South Wales Alliance Premier Division club Sully Sports last Saturday in round one.

One tie that stands out is a Port Talbot derby, involving Welsh League newcomers Trefelin Boys Club and Goytre United in Cwmavon.

Wet conditions last Saturday led to many ties being called off, and they are due to be decided this weekend.

Full Sourthern Section draw: Rhayader Town or Caerau Ely v Goytre (Mon), Haverfordwest County v Undy Athletic, Llantwit Major v Llandrindod Wells, Taffs Well or Port Talbot Town v Llanelli Town, Treowen Stars or Risca Utd v Ton Pentre, Trefelin Boys Club v Goytre Utd, Ynysygerwn v Monmouth Town, Barry Town Utd v Penybont, Afan Lido v Pontardawe Town or Cwmbran Celtic, Caldicot Town v Cwmamman Utd or Caerau.

Ties to be played November 4/5/6.
