Dad’s advent calendar bid for children

A BRIDGEND dad wants to collect 500 advent calendars for kids who may not otherwise get one.

Steve Davies-Evans started Calendars for Kids after learning that some underprivileged children won’t have the joy of opening a new door each day in December.

He has set up six collection points across the borough and collected around 150 calendars in just the first few days.

“There are hundreds and hundreds of children in Bridgend county who won’t be getting as good a Christmas as my child,” said Steve, 33, from Brackla, dad to Ellie, 11.

“If an advent calendar can make their Christmas just one per cent better then it’s worth doing.”

“It’s human that we get so wrapped up in what we are doing for our kids for Christmas that we forget there are some kids out there that are ill, in foster care or temporary accommodation.

“We have set a target of 500 calendars, but ideally we would love to smash that target.”

Steve has worked with supermarkets and his employer, Business Sense in Tondu, to set up collection points across the borough. They are at:

Sainsbury’s Bridgend; Co-op Brackla; Co-op Porthcawl; Princess of Wales Hospital front desk;

Business Sense, office 26, Tondu Enterprise Park;

Nellie Treckle (Ogmore Vale).

“If everyone just bought one calendar, there would be one more child with a smile on their face,” he said.

Donations can be made until Sunday, November 27. Steve will then present the calendars to Bridgend council’s social services department, disabled children’s charity Y Bont and charity Tros Gynnal.

Steve, who came up with the idea with a friend, added: “We want to make this an annual thing.”
