RESIDENTS in Cardiff are being asked to throw on their dancing shoes and head to their favourite green space in the city for a new short film that celebrates our local environment.

Wildlife charity RSPB Cymru and performance company Migrations have teamed up to film 100 people dance to their favourite song in the outdoor patch that means the most to them.

The resulting short film will be called Boombox Caerdydd and showcased in next spring to honour the city’s communities and wild spaces.

It’s part of RSPB Cymru’s Giving Nature a Home in Cardiff project which encourages people living in Cardiff to connect with the nature on their doorstep and take action to support it.

Two of its previous projects saw Bute Park wrapped in tape and people donning virtual reality helmets to view the world “in the eyes the animal”.

Carolyn Robertson, Giving Nature a Home in Cardiff project manager, said: “Since 2014, Giving Nature a Home in Cardiff has been busy popping up in parks all over Cardiff, engaging over 20,000 people.

“With over 400 green spaces across the city, Boombox Caerdydd is the perfect opportunity for the people of Cardiff to put the spotlight on the wild spaces that mean something to them – celebrating places we haven’t even discovered yet.”

Boombox Caerdydd follows the success of Boombox Eryri in North Wales, which saw 100 people dancing across Snowdonia.

Cabinet member for environment, Coun Bob Derbyshire, said: “Cardiff is...blessed with some beautiful outdoor spaces.

“The Giving Nature a Home in Cardiff project is helping to connect people with nature across the city and Boombox Caerdydd will really enhance the sense of wonder that our wildlife evokes.”

The idea is the brain child of American artist Ely Kim who clocked up tens of thousands of views on YouTube when he filmed himself dancing to 100 different songs in 100 different locations in 2009.

Karine Décorne, artistic director of Migrations, said: “We are thrilled to be collaborating with Ely Kim. The beauty of Boombox is that you don’t need to be a professional dancer to get involved...it’s all about having fun and experiencing the joys of dancing.”
