SOUTHERNDOWN

THE Hanner Ffordd tournament staged by Southerndown Senior Section last week was won by B Dudley on the strength of 37 Stableford points.

A two on the 10 hole allied to six pars did the job and his victory was by a single point over G W Jones.

Three players got 33 points out of their rounds – R Howells, H J Harris and Barrie Davies – with A J Vigar on the 32-point mark.

MAESTEG

PAST Captain’s Day at Maesteg attracted over 20 players while others were just satisfied to attend a celebration clubhouse function.

Paul Lewis hosted the event with Raymond Miller grinding out victory with an exceptional 38 Stableford points.

And there was a welcome return to form for Gareth Evans, who lifted the Barry Habberfield Cup.

Like most golfers at some time, he has experienced the kind of form that makes you question why you bother to play the game.

But those thoughts went on the backburner last week, as he burnt up the Steve Trickey lovingly manicured course on the back of a sizzling 40 Stableford points.

Brendan Kehoe was runner-up with a countback 38 points from John Richmond.

COED-Y-MWSTWR

MAL Griffiths, Glyn Jackman, Lloyd Pritchard and Elliot Williams took last Saturday’s Japanese Texas Scramble at Coedy-Mwstwr.

Their winning score was Gross 63 – 6.8 = 56.2 while runners-up Jill L Davies, Andy Dunn, Michael Jacques and Matthew Richards signed for Gross 65 – 7.1 = 57.9.

Third-place finishers Daniel Jenkins, Clive M Tremlett, David B FordWilliams and Chris Wilson entered the house with Gross 65 – 6.2 = 58.8.

And fourth place went to Peter Ashman, Andrew Goss, Nicola Hopkins and Huw Rodgers via Gross 67 – 7.5 = 59.5.

Earlier, Peter Fraser shot a nett 62 to take a November Medal tourna- ment. The Fraser card of 81-19-62 saw him birdie the sixth hole and match par on seven occasions.

Runner-up Simon Boga-Lake went birdie on hole 15 and recorded eight pars in his round of 78-15-63.

Simon J Slennett was third via 87-22-65 from Lee Griffiths 75-9-66 and Barry Lewis 74-7-67.

Low gross round of the day came from sixthplaced Andrew Hill with 74-5-69 courtesy of birdies on holes one, 13 and 16 together with seven pars.

Meanwhile, wet and windy conditions last week led to just 22 Senior members competing in the weekly Stableford event.

However, weather conditions proved sunny for Jonny McEachen, who carded a bright and breezy victory via 39 points.

His victory was built on 10 pars and he had three points in hand over Richard T Commander, who fired a birdie on the 13th hole and got five pars.

Third-placed John Jones signed for 35 points with Eifion Evans and Byron Cox scoring 33 points.

Sixth-placed Graham Cartwright came in with 32 points, as did Philip Weston, while four players hit 31 points.

It was a popular score on the day and was carded by Maesteg star Dave Roderick, feisty competitor D R Stead, Andrew Cox and Mal Brooks.

Just three counts of two were registered with John Jones and Stewart Parry holing out on the fourth green with Byron Cox doing likewise on the 11th.
