-

GOLF

THERE was nothing dire in the round of Richard Dyer who took the sixth leg of the winter-long Order of Merit competition at The Grove.

Though he struck 41 Stableford points, countback was called on to separate him and former Lakeside captain Gary Tamlyn.

Three players were then just one point in arrears – Phil Davis, Richie Cliffe and Timothy Baynham.

Twelve players had twos on their cards – Kevin Budge, Anthony Carey, Gareth CarterClare, Stanley Clarke, Richie Cliffe, Richard Dyer, Martin Evans, Steffan Hart, Neil Jones, Joseph Lacey, Gary Tamlyn and Jason Thomas.

The Senior Section last week held a third Turkey Trot leg with Tony Jones signing for a meaty 35 Stableford points.

That was a sound score in wet and windy conditions with runner-up Neil Jones collecting 34 points to finish two clear of thinking man’s golfer Philip Rees.

Yesterday, Grove Senior Section were due to hold the fourth leg of their pre-Christmas Turkey Trot series.

ST MARY’S

THIS Saturday St Mary’s are staring to tuck in to their annual meal of Turkey Trot Stableford.

In an anticipated busy weekend out on the Pencoed course, the Winter League tournament continues on Sunday.

During the first real bout of the wet and windies last weekend the special Andy Hill 60th-Birthday Bash competition had to be cancelled.

But the Eclectic was contested on Sunday and considering all the rain that fell, the greens ran remarkably well.

Jason Jones led the way with a quality card of 73-11-62, and was followed on the scoreboard by former Tondu cricket star Gary Donnachie, who hit 8617-69. .

Captain fantastic Neil Channell shot 75-5-70 while fourth-placed Hugh Williams entered the house with 84-14-70.

In the 1-11 handicap category, leadership is disputed by three players - Stanley Locke, Jason Jones and Dave Scourfield - who all have 73-11-62 against their names, and they are being hunted down by skipper Channell on 695-64.

But in the 12-18 section, you need binoculars to sight John Paul Lewis with 68-14-54 who has streaked away from the field.

The chasing pack is headed by Gareth Leek (75-13-62) and Rob Davies (80-18-62) along with one-paced Donnachie (80-17-63).

Jonny Jones is out ahead of the high handicappers (19-28) with 8123-58 while older brother Rodney (88-28-60) gives chase together with Christopher Mason (7919-60) and Dave Thomas (88-25-63).
