Must-win league game for Llantwit Major

FOOTBALL

LLANTWIT Major resume duties in Nathaniel Cars Welsh League Division Three this Saturday against Penrhiwceiber Rangers at Windmill Lane, writes Tony Poole.

The Windmillers have been inactive for two weekends and manager Karl Lewis is hoping batteries have been recharged and the boys are ready to rumble against the Cynon Valley side.

Last winter, following a slow start, they finished like a steam train, completing their Division Three journey in sixth spot.

This time around, they are hoping to go one better and gain promotion to Division Two.

But while that’s the main aim, thoughts are bound to stray to Saturday week and Cefn Druids away in the J D Welsh Cup.

It’s the biggest day in club history since downing Sully Sports in a 2012 playoff match at Bryntirion Park to win promotion to the Welsh League as South Wales Amateur League champions.

This season superb form in both the J D Welsh Cup and Nathaniel Cars League Cup has led to league fixtures piling up.

In the League Cup, they have a big January showdown when Caerau Ely will come knocking on the Windmill Lane door.

Now in a fifth season in the Welsh League, promotion from Division Three is difficult with only two places up for grabs.

It seems STM Sports, Ely Rangers, Caerau, Bridgend Street, Llantwit Major and Trefelin are the leading lights.

The Windmillers have ground to make up and a win is a must against Ceiber, who have been a Welsh League club since 1992.

In the run up to the game, Gareth Davies - twin brother of Glyndwr - has signed from Brynna and goes into the squad.

This time around, Llantwit Major have scored 35 goals in league and cup with six-goal hitman Rob Jones heading the goal chart.

Four Dale Stephenson rockets come next while fox in the box Luke Cox, Lee Jones, Rhys Llewellyn and Max Morgan are all on the three-goal mark.

Goal braces have been bagged by Thomas Danter, Glyndwr Davies, Mike Flavell, Gethin Jennings and Jamie Williams.

Jonny Butler has dished up one goal along with Fraser Wheatley while an Aberdare Town own-goal completes the list.
