Lucky dog Kenco survives cliff fall

A PET dog had a miracle escape after falling more than 200ft off a cliff at Southerndown.

Shanice Francis and her boyfriend Joshua Walsh, from Llanrumney, Cardiff, took three-year-old Kenco for a walk at the beach last Thursday.

Their playful Chinese shar-pei spotted a flock of sheep and started chasing them before he ran off the edge of the 200ft cliff.

His horrified owners searched for four hours for their beloved pet, and it was only when they heard a faint cry from the pebble beach below that they realised what had happened.

Shanice said: “When we heard the whimpering we broke down.

“I ended up running and tripping on the rocks trying to get to him.

“We carried him back to the car and took him straight to the vets.”

Kenco was badly injured with cuts and bruises in the fall – he also broke the toe on his front paw and needed air drained from his lungs and his chest cavity.

His owners were told he might not survive the night and were advised to take him home where he would be more comfortable.

Shanice said: “I was heartbroken when they said that. But we weren’t giving up.”

They had to check Kenco’s breathing rate every hour, and were told that if it went higher than 50 breaths per minute to rush him back to the vets.

Fortunately after returning home, Kenco has made a quick recovery and is now back to doing what he loves – sitting on a mat by the back door watching the world go by.

Shanice said: “He survived the odds like no-one thought he would and now he’s back to his normal self.

“I can’t believe he’s still here – I can’t stop staring at him!”
