LAST Saturday’s South African Stableford Pairs competitio­n at Southerndo­wn went to Rob Briggs and Paul Rees via a countback 46 points.

Marcus Goldsworth­y and Martin Mitchell had to be satisfied with the runners-up spot while Frank Bradshaw and Keiron Harman were third on the back of a countback 43 points.

Fourth place was claimed by Geraint Davies and Geraint Matthews.

Meanwhile, the third Senior Section Turkey Trot event of the season saw Dr Brian Dawson take the right medicine via a last-gasp birdie.

It came on the home hole and was just what the doctor ordered, as it moved him on to a winning score of 35 Stableford points.

Earlier, nine pars had him close to the top of the leaderboar­d which was minus the King of Turkey in waiting Ed Parker.

He won the first leg outright, and was edged out on countback by Dr Dawson for the second.

Viv Sheppard was runner-up on this occasion – a birdie on the 15th hole along with five pars jettisoned him onto 32 points.

A birdie on hole 16 set up N R Thomas for thirdplace honours on 30 points with Steve Sheppard matching the score.

Colin Edmunds entered the house with 28 points, and there was more pain for retired dentist Adrian Daniel.

He got it in the teeth via no-returns on holes three and 17, but did fill his card with a magnificen­t seven pars in 28 points.

Colin Standing and Richard Morgan were next on the leaderboar­d on the strength of 27-point returns.

Three players carded twos – Dr Keith James on the fifth; G Fry cooked his on the 14th green and G Fox carded a crafty one on the 10th hole.

In a Ladies Stableford tournament, Alexa Browning swept to victory on 35 points, shooting a sweet 16th hole birdie and two pars.

Runner-up on 31 points was captain Lyn Walters while Ali Churchouse signed for 29 points (birdie on the second hole). cated nine-holer courtesy of an under-par winning round of 19 Stableford points.

The highlight was matching par on the fourth hole while runnerup Carole Vaughan entered three pars on a card worth par 18 points.

Carole Hutchings came third with 16 points, finishing two points clear of Celia Thomas.

And further down the scoreboard, Norma Foreman sunk a putt for two on the sixth green.
