FIVE competitor­s were under par and a further five matched it during a competitiv­e Yellow Box Stableford event last Saturday at Royal Porthcawl, writes Tony Poole.

The winner with an exceptiona­l 41 points was N DJ Jones who was really in the slot during the inward nine holes.

He went birdie on holes 10, 12, 17 and 18 while eight pars kept his fine round on the boil.

Just one point back was Steve Bull, who got a two on hole 11 and birdie on 10 along with nine pars.

Third-placed Dave Thursfield shot 38 points, as did Philip Matthews, who birdied the opening hole.

Dave Mullins carded 37 and Mike Mullins par 36 – both off away handicaps – with Angus Maclean, Barrie Melhuish, luckless Brian Nicholas andDL Jones the other par men.

The card of 10th-placed finisher Jones was noteworthy, as he went eagle on the eighth green and birdie on the fifth and recorded nine pars.

Meanwhile, on the Ladies scene, Janet Hopkin went under par in winning a Nine-Hole Stableford Qualifier.

Pars on holes four and six hurried her on to a winning 19 points and the victory was by two points over Andrea Clowes.

Third-placed Sally Kennedy got 16 points out of her round; Patti Wallis recorded 15 points and Pamela Williams 14.

Four players all registered 13 points – Susan Knight, Jane Maine, Jane Frampton and Isobel Lowe.
