CORNELLY UNITED ..... 0 CADOXTON BARRY ..... 3

CORNELLY United weren’t at the races against third-placed Cadoxton Barry and ended up also rans, writes Tony Poole.

The Meadow Street boys were without key personnel of the calibre of Rhys Alden, Matt Davies, Shaun Duffy and Mike Wilson – and basically it stood out like a sore finger.

Goalkeeping resources were also stretched – leading to P&K golf star Ted Bovis saying Hi Di Hi to the gloves.

Dann Jones, however, went close for Cornelly early on while Cadoxton front runner Jake Oaten missed a sitter.

The breakthrough wasn’t made until the 42nd minute when overlapping full-back Ross Weekly had all day to cross.

When it came in, Ricky Sansome was unmarked on the back post and he headed past exposed shot-stopper Bovis.

Cadoxton led 1-0 at the interlude and should have gone two up when Jimmy Dawson missed from point-blank range.

However, it did become 2-0 on the hour when bench warmer Shaun Jachontow scored within a minute of coming on.

Cornelly were now finding it difficult to release the pressure valve, and as soon as the ball was cleared it shot back.

That was the case in the 63rd minute when home defender Dai Clarke was adjudged to have handled in the box.

Luke Walsh took responsibility, but his spotkick floated high above Bovis and smashed a window in the Green Acre car park.

A slip by dainty Dai Cane then set up another Cadoxton chance with this time Travell Konten making a hash of it.

Isolated moments of positivity threatened a Cornelly response but butterfingers Bovis gifted Jachontow an early Christmas box that completed the scoring.

A seventh league defeat kept Cornelly anchored towards the bottom that said Cadoxton look an unlikely promotion bet.

Cornelly visit FC Cwmaman in the league on Saturday, and host the same opponents a week later.
