CAERAU ......................... 2 TRETHOMAS BLUEBIRDS .................... 0

GOALS in each half from Tom Walters got the Caerau promotion bandwagon back on track against league newcomers Trethomas Bluebirds, writes Tony Poole.

These goals allowed young Walters to level with chum Chay Davies on the 11-goal mark at the top of the Riverboat chart.

Having drawn 3-3 with Trefelin and lost 3-1 to Chepstow, Riverboat lovers were delighted no Bluebirds were spotted over the white cliffs of Caerau last Saturday night.

The victory took Caerau back to the summit from Ely Rangers, STM Sports and Llantwit Major.

But Saturday’s hosts Trefelin are making a big statement, and the seventh-placed Treefellers have games in hand.

This is viewed as an early season key clash in the tooth and nail battle that is again raging to secure two promotion allocations.

Caerau had the lead in the 24th minute against Trethomas after Ryan Morgan went close with an acrobatic bicycle effort.

Adam Jenkins made ground down the left, linked with Ryan BunnyJohn, and Walters did the rest in classy fashion.

Walters continued to catch the Bluebirds on the hop and had the ball in the back of the net again.

But instead of playing advantage from a George Dawes throw in, the referee blew early and Caerau only led 1-0 at the break.

The Riverboaters went up the slope during the second half with wellpositioned Chay Davies shooting straight at the goalkeeper.

It was then the turn of Dylan Llewellyn to go close while a Shaun James shot fell to Llewellyn, who shot over the top.

Fears were now spreading like wildfire that these misses might come back to haunt the Riverboaters.

But they calmed nerves close to time and after ox in the box Joel Joseph had a shot saved, Walters found an empty net.

Instead of Llantwit Major at home in the league this Saturday it’s replaced by a swift league rematch away to on-fire Trefelin.
