Superb entertainment from Mike Doyle and Bridgend Male Choir
A GALA concert by the Bridgend Male Choir, featuring Mike Doyle and the Bridgend Rock Choir at the Sony Theatre in Bridgend College, was a huge success, writes Naomi Hitchings.
An understated Llanfair, allowed the men to warm up and introduce themselves. A heartfelt Yfory was moving.
This is the Moment from the musical Jekyll and Hyde followed and was sung with fervour and passion. Once the Sweet Charity favourite, The Rhythm of Life, commenced the choir was really getting into their stride and clearly enjoying themselves.
The superb accompanist Stephanie Bailey was remarkably adept and accomplished with Scott Williams playing the Primo part in this duet.
What Would I Do Without My Music followed. The atmosphere created by the wordless introduction was truly magical.
Congratulations to musical director Ryan Wood for his energy and for his choice of programme with music from the very broad spectrum of male voice choir repertoire.
The Rock Choir was expertly conducted by Stephanie Bailey. Numbering approximately 50 singers, they performed a rousing A Little Respect, which was followed by more musically complex Budapest and a contrasting Mary’s Prayer.
The second half of the concert was a spirit-raising performance by the fantastic Mike Doyle.
Opening and closing with a musical number accompanied by his own fourpiece band, he had the audience guffawing with laughter from the outset.
