WITH last week’s leaders Nantymoel Rug sitting out a bye, the Social took over at the top thanks to a 6-3 victory over the visiting Pant.

In the pairs, Dai Frowen with Stu Angove then Ian and Josh Williams, who hit a 180, put the Pant 2-0 up before Chris Packman and Nick Winn pulled one back for the Social. The home boys then won five of the six singles through John Pritchard, Winn, Packman, Carl Short and “Lenny” Lane, who hit a 108 finsh with Frowen rescuing one for the Pant. Last year’s champions the Vetz moved up to second after coming from the Nantymoel Inn with another 6-3 win. The Inn won the opening twp pairs through Mark Lewis with John Hillman, Andrew Hillman and Anthony “Baggy” Jones, Then, Mike Huntley and Dai Astley took one for the Vetz, who then took five singles courtesy of Huntley, “Big” Billy Absalom, Lee Haines, Andrew Woods and Richard Watkins with the Lion Lewis taking one for the Inn. At the Blaengarw Hotel, the home team beat Sarn also 6-3. They took all three pairs through Dai and Dan Gillet, Des Stadden and Chris Hanford followed by Lloyd Willis and Nathan Evans. The two Gillet boys and Hanford also won their singles with Chris and Ray John also Steve Rogers getting three points for Sarn. The game between the Colliers and Blaengarw Rugby was cancelled, The only other game of the night was between Ogmore Rugby and the Con.

Wayne “Freeze” Griffiths and new signing Karl “Jackal” Edwards, then Rob Shop and Jeff Raynor won their pairs for the Con with Dai Gunter and young Derek Skinner getting one for the rugby. The singles were shared with Skinner, Gunter and Mike Hamer winning for the rugby and Ken Swain, Steve Wright and Rob Shop checking out for the Con.

Next week it’s up to the Vetz for the fours where the hosts will be pulling out all the stops to retain the trophy they won last season.
