Fury as Christmas cards arrive open

PEOPLE in Bridgend are complaining about their Christmas cards being opened and money removed.

Alan Drury, 49, who is a regional fund manager for a charity who lives in Bridgend, has had more than one bad experience.

Last Monday he had two Christmas cards arrive that appear to have been opened.

He wrote on the community Facebook group Scumbag Watch Bridgend: “Anyone else in Bridgend had issues with Christmas mail arriving suspiciously ‘damaged’?”

He has questioned Royal Mail over what has gone wrong.

“Ours has been reported to Royal Mail today,” he added.

The post received 70 comments with people reporting similar experiences.

Mr Drury later received another opened Christmas card. This one had previously been sellotaped before sending.

He said: “On Monday, after the the two cards were opened I phoned Royal Mail to register a complaint and they said they would take it up with the local sorting office. I have heard nothing back from them since.

“They seem to say it is the machine that does it but the machine can’t take money out.

“I know when you are sending money they say you should send it special delivery but you shouldn’t have to do that. Not having the mail opened should be a prerequisite.

“Initially I put it up to see if it had happened elsewhere. I was shocked at how widespread it is. It is clearly not just in my area but all over Bridgend.”

A Royal Mail spokesperson said: “We process and deliver millions of items of mail each day without incident. However items of mail can occasionally arrive open, either because they are poorly packaged or damaged as they pass through our machine processes. Every item of mail is important to us and all our postmen and women are vigilant for open mail.

“We can investigate the matter further if the sender contacts Royal Mail Customer Services on 03457 740740 with evidence of the damaged mail.”
